Keren Hayesod, in conjunction with various local organizations and communities around the world, marked the first anniversary of the vicious attack with commemorative events to honor and remember those who were murdered and the fallen and to raise awareness of the plight of the hostages.
Melbourne, Australia: A crowd of 5,000 individuals attended a commemorative event.
Perth, Australia: Addressing an audience of 1,500, Jeremy Shor spoke about his cousin, Ron Benjamin, who was murdered while riding his bike near the Gaza border and whose body was kidnapped.
Sydney, Australia: Over 12,000 people took part in a massive event addressed by Steven Lowy AM, Chairman of the KH World Board of Trustees.
Buenos Aires, Argentina: Over 1,600 people took part in a marathon against terrorism; 15,000 people joined in the singing of HaTikva.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 700 people turned out to mark the occasion.
Sao Paulo, Brazil: The mother of a Hanani Glazer z”l, who was murdered at the Nova festival, and two wounded soldiers spoke at an event attended by 2,500 people.
Santiago, Chile: Following a community ceremony in a Jewish school, a discussion ensued about Keren Hayesod’s role in the aftermath of Oct. 7th.
Mexico City, Mexico: 700 people participated in an event featuring Haim Gritsewski, brother of former hostage Ilana Gritsewski, who spoke about the support he and his family received from Keren Hayesod and the Fund for Victims of Terror.
Lima, Peru: The anniversary of the massacre was marked by an exhibit by documentary photographer Ziv Koren, “When Words End,” which tells the story of Lima-born Daniel Levy, who was murdered on Oct. 7th.
Bogota, Colombia: October 7th Yizkor Ceremony, with 500 members of Jewish Communities, Israeli diplomats, and Colombian journalists.
Toronto, Canada: 40,000 people – Jews and allies – heard testimony by Nova Festival survivors and joined dignitaries in prayers for the return of hostages at in-person/virtual event.
Montreal, Canada: 3,000 people came out for an event that included a talk by the mother of Alexandre Looke from Montreal who was murdered on Oct. 7th.
Vancouver, Canada: 2,700 community members gathered for a memorial ceremony at which the names of the victims were read.
Paris, France: 150 people took part in an auction whose proceeds were dedicated to Keren Hayesod to benefit victims of the massacre.
Berlin, Germany: A 3-part event included a ceremony at the Memorial Church, attended by Germany’s president and foreign minister, a walk of silence to the Jewish community center, and a panel discussion as well as an appeal for the “Communities2Gether” project.
Halle, Germany: A memorial marking the deadly attack in Halle on October 9, 2019, featured the inauguration of a new Torah scroll – a project initiated last year by KH and CSE. The letters of the last word – “Israel” – were inscribed by various dignitaries.
Stuttgart, Germany: Stella Syrkin, KH representative in southern Germany, was one of the speakers at a solidarity event organized by various Christian organizations; more than 1,000 people took part.
Madrid, Spain: A monument commemorating the massacre was unveiled.
Geneva, Switzerland: A conference featured Ayelet Samerano, mother of Yonatan Samerano, who was murdered and whose body was abducted to Gaza by an UNRWA social worker.
Zurich, Switzerland: 13 organizations joined in a ceremony that featured the lighting of memorial candles and speeches by the president of KH Switzerland and Ayelet Samerano, mother of Yonatan Samerano, who was murdered and whose body was abducted to Gaza by an UNRWA social worker.
Hungary: A solidarity event attended by many Jews and supporters of Israel, including Hungarian Jewish singers who created a special song, especially for the one year of war event, and was performed on it.
